Have you ever changed your views on project vehicles? Maybe you are working on a project and for some reason you decide to change direction. It happens often, sometimes even when you look at the next item.

In 1989, William still lived at home, and almost all the reconstruction work was done in his parents' garage.

William Pastoor happened to be looking for a vintage car to pass the time and empty his wallet, and he found what he thought he wanted. "I was looking for a car and stumbled upon a car for sale magazine. In it, I found a 1970 Oldsmobile W30 at a vintage car dealer," said William.

In 1971, only 1,919 large SS Monte Carlos were built. This makes this a rare hot rod. Image courtesy of Alaina Pastoor.

"When I went to the agent, I found Olds had been sold," William said. This is where Williams plans to change direction. "Then I saw a Monte Carlo from 1971 and tested it. That's all," he quipped. The second ride was not only a good-looking Monte, but also a reward of 454 chunks and SS badges.

(Left) Under construction in 1989. (Right) Completed. The SS 454 kit requires F41 suspension and G67 automatic level control. The leveling system consists of a compressor pump, a rear leveling valve, a rear air shock absorber and the corresponding shock absorber air line shield. It runs strictly on the engine vacuum, which is first sent to the large compressor pump installed on the top of the left front inner fender. Then distribute the pressure to the air shock absorber.

The car is in good condition, but it needs a bit of TLC. The body was stripped to bare metal, and due to rust, a new GM quarter panel and front fender were installed on the passenger side. The original door and hood are in good shape, and the trunk lid is replaced by a second-hand Buick that does not rust. “Due to the limited space in my parents’ garage, the body has been left on the frame. I made all the bodywork, then prepared and blocked the body a few times. My friend Ray Standard then used PPG Concept acrylic polyurethane single-stage paint to paint it Paint it white," he said.

The engine is the LS5 used in the original car. It has been drilled 0.060 inches and the hole is filled with TRW pistons. Inside is a Crower cam that is used to move the larger 2.19/1.88 inch Manley valve. The head has been transplanted to match the Weiand Action Plus intake manifold with Holley 750 dual pumps. The exhaust is exhausted through a set of Hooker Super Comp headers and Flowmaster. The engine was rebuilt by friend and colleague Dave Vos.

William rebuilt the original Turbo 400 with TCI kits and added a gear shift improvement kit and a deep disk for good measurements. The Hughes torque converter stalls at a speed of 2,500 rpm, and the transmission system converges behind the 12 bolts, using Moroso Brute Strength positraction and 3:31 gears.

The interior is mostly original, but before William bought it, the cloth on the seat was replaced with vinyl. The carpet has also been replaced, but the rest of the interior consists of the original instrument panel, roof and door panels. Internal facilities include: power windows, four-way power adjustable benches, tilt columns, air conditioning, AM radio, rear window defroster and tinted glass.
