You can create a scalloped edge in just a few simple steps...

Fan-shaped walls are a popular Instagram trend and are a great way to refresh tired walls or regional spaces.

Marianne Shillingford, creative director of Dulux, said: “The scallop wall is a great way to make your space unique and inject some fun and vitality into the room.” “I often see it in nurseries. A sophisticated living room or dining room can also work well."

When painting the fan-shaped wall, you should allow the top color to overflow the ceiling to create a completely comfortable cocoon. Although this feature wall idea is relatively easy to implement, you should carefully plan the design before you start and imagine how the entire room will look under the new design.

If you have a high ceiling...

"If you have a large space with a high ceiling, placing the scallop line three-quarters of the wall will help create a comfortable feeling and pull the ceiling down to surround you," Marianne suggested.

If you paint in a compact space...

Marianne advises: "If you work in a small space, choose to place the line in the middle so as not to make the room feel smaller. Painting the skirting board in the same shade as the bottom half will also help maximize your space.

If you don't want to paint a whole wall...

You don't have to paint a whole wall to keep up with the trend. Marianne said: "A more clever way to use scallops is around the door or on the top of the skirting board. This is an interesting little element that will make you smile every time it attracts your eye."

Before you start, Marianne recommends that you practice on a piece of painted backing paper or part of your unpainted wall. Marianne said: "No one can get the perfect scallop with a little touch at the end, so don't worry, just have a good time."

1. Paint the wall with the background color of your choice.

Important note: With Dulux Simply Refresh color, you can get the look with just one coat.

2. Make your own scallop template by drawing a plate on thin cardboard (craft cards or old cereal packets glued together with tape are perfect). Place the plate so that half of it is on the top edge of the cardboard. The goal is to draw at least 3 scallops in a row.

3. Cut them out neatly so you have a continuous scallop-shaped template.

Important: If you plan to use them as templates, make two or three templates.

4. Determine the height of the scallop details, and then use colored chalk to draw a horizontal straight line on the width of the wall. Use a level and a ruler to make sure it is straight. Apply masking tape along the chalk line and paint in scallop color.

Important: Use rope and colored chalk to quickly create easy-to-follow straight lines. Cut the length of the rope a bit longer than the wall you are working on. Pull the rope through the chalk a few times so that the rope will be covered in color. Tie a knot at one end and put some tape in front of the knot. Measure and mark the height you want on either side of the wall, then glue the knotted rope to one of the marks. Take the other end of the rope, pull it all the way to the opposite mark, lean against the wall and tighten it, then break it to create a perfect horizontal line. (Watch the video tutorial here).

5. Use masking tape to position the template along the drawn line so that each point of the scallop can touch it. You can now use it as a template to draw the scallops directly onto the wall and paint with a small brush, or use it as a template and then use a small foam radiator roller to apply the paint directly to the template.

Important note: If you use a brush, please make sure it is a good quality 1" or 2" acrylic brush. If you use a roller, please make sure that the paint is evenly distributed in the foam and is not overloaded, otherwise it will creep under the edges. There is one on hand. Little artist's brush to make up for any mistakes.
