A Royal Mail mailbox was sealed after putting dog dung in it.

Tape and a sign are pasted on the post box at the end of Hockcliffe Church in Bedfordshire.

The Royal Mail notice read: "Because the public put dog dung in this mailbox, we have to seal this box until further notice."

People in the village said that the two trash cans, the trash can and the dog dung, were "close" and the same color, which made people sometimes confused.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "Our postmen and ladies have to go through this situation when picking up the mail. This is unacceptable."

Maria, the dog walker, who declined to give her surname, said: "They are too close, and they are exactly the same color."

However, she speculated that "sometimes the dog trash can is full, so someone might find it interesting" put it in the Royal Mailbox.

She added that their purpose is obvious, but thinks it might help if the color of the trash can is different.

Jim Com, in the village, said he had seen people throw rubbish into mailboxes, but then realized and "changed his mind."

"I don't think it was intentional; it's just that the two trash cans are too close, [people] confused without thinking," he said.

"I was close to doing this on my own, and then realized."

He thinks that one of the red boxes should be moved.

Royal Mail said: “We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this may cause, but the safety of our employees and the safety of mail are of the utmost importance.”
