PERINTON, N.Y. — The hometown of fallen Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz is paying their respects ahead of his memorial services.

The town of Perinton is lighting up blue during a procession on Sunday in honor of Mazurkiewicz, who served the department for 29 years. Mazurkiewicz was fatally shot on July 21.

Along with blue ribbons tied throughout the town, community members are encouraged to participate by shining their own blue light to remember Mazurkiewicz and the impact he leaves on the community.

“So many people want to pay their respects and its’s going to be difficult,” Perinton Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna said. “It’s going to be a difficult time, it’s going to be very crowded. I don’t know that everyone’s going to be able to do that, and this gives them that opportunity"

The procession is expected to leave the Richard H. Keenan Funeral Home in Fairport between 8:30 and 9 p.m. On Sunday.

It will head west on Pittsford-Palmyra Road, before going north on mason and then west on Ayrault Road before getting on Interstate 490.

The procession will end at the Public Safety Building where Mazurkiewicz’s body will be held overnight prior to his funeral service at the Blue Cross Arena.

Residents can participate in lighting Perinton blue by playing the video located on the town’s YouTube page, which features a blue in memoriam image which can be displayed for an extended amount of time, or by placing a piece of blue colored tape over a cellphone flashlight to make the light appear blue.

“This community, I’ve seen it time and time again, difficult times they come through,” Hanna said. “And I would just love to see them come through on this as well,”

Community members can look for updates on the procession details on the town’s Facebook page or on the town of Perinton’s website.
