Insist on using sustainable packaging tape to reduce carbon footprint

We consume 915 billion meters of disposable plastic packaging tape globally every year, which is equivalent to twice the distance from Earth to Mars. Disposable plastics, including traditional packaging tape, can cause climate change. They are made from non-renewable resources and can be broken down into microplastics, polluting our oceans, rivers and land.

A contributing factor to this growth is the rise of e-commerce, which has been further amplified as we adapt to the pandemic. As more and more consumer goods are shipped in single packages, e-commerce in Australia is developing rapidly, and the widespread use of these plastics has led to an increase in landfills. According to data from Australia Post, online shopping reached a record high in 2020. Online shopping increased by 57% year-on-year, and total online spending in Australia reached US$50.46 billion.

tesa is actively working with customers and industry organizations to develop new and innovative sustainable packaging tape solutions. The latest additions include packaging tape made from paper and bio-based materials from well-managed and responsible sources.

Since the new materials are derived from renewable resources such as plants, they can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and provide other benefits, such as reduced toxicity. This is exactly what consumers are demanding more and more all over the world-especially if sustainable production methods do not affect product performance.

Bio-based products are now increasingly used in the production of tapes. Bio-based products are all or partly obtained from materials of organic origin under stringent conditions. Many or ideally all traditional synthetic processes are being replaced by natural processes such as fermentation or biocatalysis in production. This can achieve higher process efficiency, thereby reducing energy and water consumption, and reducing toxic waste.

tesa® 60400 is the first bio-based tape in this series. The backing material chosen for this tape is polylactic acid, also known as PLA. This bioplastic material is made from plant-based materials that are renewable every year, such as corn starch, cassava root, and sugar cane. These ingredients have a naturally low carbon footprint and excellent performance characteristics.

tesa® 60400 adhesive is also made almost entirely from renewable raw materials. In addition to natural rubber, natural-based resins are also used, which almost completely replace the use of petroleum-based materials. Combined with the backing material, the total biocarbon content of tesa 60400 is 98%.

Another sustainable product in the tesa series is 4713, which is a paper tape made from a controlled and responsible source. tesa® 4713 packaging tape can be processed together with the cardboard without disturbing the recycling process.

Tesa's sustainability goal is that by 2025, the number of sustainable products in the series will double, carbon dioxide emissions will be halved, and 80% of the materials will come from certified sustainable suppliers. Since the end of 2020, tesa will meet all tesa's entire electricity needs through renewable energy all over the world. In addition, compared with 2018, energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by 23%.

Sustainable products help tesa achieve its own sustainable development goals and support customers to achieve their goals.
