Swedish recycling facility treats all household plastic waste

Svensk Plaståtervinning (Svensk Plaståtervinning) is investing 1 billion Swedish kronor-more than 116.5 million U.S. dollars to develop state-of-the-art plastic recycling facilities in its existing facility in Motala, Sweden. The new business will be able to recycle all plastic packaging in Swedish households without emitting carbon dioxide (CO2). The new factory called Site Zero covers an area of 60,000 square meters/645,835 square feet and will be completed in 2023. The plant will be able to process 200,000 tons of plastic packaging annually. This created the conditions for receiving and eventually [recycling] all plastic packaging from Swedish households. The Swedish Plastics Recycling Corporation operates a nationwide system for collecting and recycling plastic packaging in Sweden. Sweden has developed extended producer responsibility legislation that affects more than 10,000 companies. The Swedish Plastics Recycling Company claims that the current Motala facility is already the most efficient recycling facility in Europe and can currently process four types of plastics. After the zero site is put into operation, it will be able to sort and recycle 12 types of waste. At zero, any small pieces of plastic remaining after sorting will be separated and sent for chemical recycling or become a new composite product. Swedish Plastics Recycling will use Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) to dispose of a small amount of non-recyclable waste. No packaging will be burned. Site Zero will be fully automated, using 60 near-infrared (NIR) sensors to sort along a conveyor belt approximately 5 kilometers/3.1 miles long.

Adhesive tape based on industrial plastic waste

German tape manufacturer Monta Klebebandwerk GmbH has developed a self-adhesive tape based on industrial plastic waste. The new tape Monta reTec 831 has a natural rubber adhesive designed to seal medium to heavy boxes. The film backing is made entirely from European Post-Industrial Recycling (PIR). The company stated that, therefore, the carbon footprint of the raw materials used is 33% lower than that of traditional BOPP plastic tape. Monta's solution aims to give new life to polypropylene waste that may have previously been discarded. At the film manufacturer's factory, the waste is processed into post-industry recycled polypropylene and used as a carrier for monta reTec 831 tape. Monta then coats this carrier with a natural rubber adhesive, which is said to meet technical requirements even on difficult surfaces or extreme environments (such as in deep-frozen areas). During processing, the tape is completely separated from the cardboard and will not interrupt the cardboard recycling process.

17-year-old kid makes planting bags from recycled plastic bottles

In July, Jinay Gada (17 years old), a student at the KJ Somaiya School of Science and Business in Mumbai, launched "Planteria", which uses non-woven fabrics to make lightweight planting bags. The planting bag is made of non-woven fabric extracted from plastic bottles and lids. They are sturdy, regulate drainage and promote air trimming. To date, Gada has sold 200 packages via social media. When the first lockdown was announced in March 2020, Garda began gardening at home. He planted various flowering plants such as roses, and some cutting plants, such as money trees, and even tried to grow fruits and vegetables. However, when he wanted to buy portable flower pots for his balcony, they were either all made of plastic or they were too expensive. So, he took the matter in my own hands and decided to let me make the planting bag myself. After some research, he learned that the planting bag is also made of fabric. In April 2021, he purchased a non-woven fabric made from waste plastic collected in a landfill through a supplier in Surat, Gujarat. Before finalizing the supplier, he tested the weight, porosity and robustness of the material.
